Walked 3 miles yesterday and ran w/ Theresa 4.58 @ 11:30 pace (Highcrest /
Coppermill). Theresa's running Hartford 1/2. If you're running Hartford I
am probably going to be at the 1/2 / full split guiding runners. I'll be
leaving after the race to go to Newport for my 1/2 on Sunday. I feel pretty
good considering I ran a decent full on Sunday but, like Tray, a little achy.

5.5 miles/10:32 pace. Still nursing some residual soreness and my throat

5 easy miles in the October rain yesterday and day off the day before. will
run about 6 tomorrow, go to Hartford on Saturday to help out and then off
to Newport that afternoon for 1/2 on Sunday. would you believe there are
4000 people running the 1/2?! about 900 marathoners and a couple hundred
5Kers. the 1/2 is HUGE. best of luck to Tracy, Mike, Sandra, Theresa, Amanda

Tony Trujillo posted this on fb. I need to study it. Frequently.

Day off today. Will run a short run on Friday as the final taper day. Getting
excited in anticipation of race day. Like those 10 Commandments above. I
guess it will be tough to find each other on Saturday in the crowds but the
Hartford Track Table/Tent will be a likely meeting sot before and after the
race.

It's a wrap!! After taking the day off Thursday, today was a final 3 mile
run and just 24 hours til race time. I'm "itchin' and a twitchin' " to start
the race. Picking up my number packet later today. Tomorrow looks a little
cool for the start but perfect temps for most of the race. Goal is 4:10 which
is 3 minutes faster than last year. See everyone at the HTC tent prior to
the race. It apparently is on the main green in Bushnell Park.

Hartford is in the books. I was slower than last year and slower than I had
planned but felt better after I finished. 4:24:51 was the official time.
Tried to keep my pace between 9:00 and 9:10 which I accomplished through
about mile 14 and then bonked! See the splits at the link. Had fun and the
weather was great. Tracy passed me at about 18 miles and she did very well
with 4:05(I think). She did great just a week after another great finish
in Albany. On to the future and checking the potential marathons. I have
3 completed but plan on many more.

I win for the least amount of miles run this week - 11! After getting over
a cold, several 10 hour work days, and trying to catch up on family time
I vow to bring the miles up to my 30 next week. It was very inspiring watching
the runners in yesterday's half marathon, especially the ladies running 5:30
miles. Speed (and abs) to which I will never know!
MCT - Monday, October 15, 2012 at 10:14:28 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
On the road again......did an easy 4.5 miles today at a 10:46 pace. Felt good.
BUT...I'm ticked about my time at Hartford so I have developed "Tracy" disease.
I need to achieve a better time than that crappy finish this past Saturday!
Therefore I am on the waiting list for the Roxbury Marathon on Dec 8th.
MCT - Monday, October 15, 2012 at 10:44:55 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
Clarification on what "Tracy" disease is. The unrelenting need to run a 2nd
race to prove to oneself that a better finish can be had. I want to make
sure no one interpreted my comment above as a slam against Tracy's ability.
tlv - Monday, October 15, 2012 at 13:09:31 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
Ha ha, Mike - you've been bitten by the "redemption" bug. It's a nasty bug
but can be just what you need to make improvements in your running times.
Although Roxbury is not a PR marathon course (due to the hills), you can
certainly take time off your Hartford race. Last year Roxbury was my 3rd
marathon in less than 60 days and I started with very little expectation
regarding time. I ended up running it 7 min. faster than Hartford and I
wasted a couple of min. taking too much of a rest to eat/drink/stretch.
I also had an issue with my right knee locking up so I couldn't take the
downhills at full force, like I usually do.
You can probably find other training plans/suggestions for how to plan out
your next 8 weeks but here's a link to Hal Higdon's plans:
http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51153/Marathon-Multiple-Marathons-Training-Program
Even if you vary what you do during the week, the weekend long run schedule
seems to make sense.
Welcome to my "diseased" world! :)

Did 2 walk, 2 run looking for friends in the full on Saturday. Managed a 1:51
in my half at Newport. Not quite what I wanted (I was talking an 8 minute
pace). I won't race again till Ghost where I am determined to do better.
My race was good ... the weather was overcast and dry and in the 60s. The
race parking was not well planned for and the race started 10 minutes late.
Time for ALL of us to take a breather. I'm looking forward to returning to
Brickyard for around 10. How does 7:30 AM at the old stompin' grounds (Brickyard

6 miles/11:27 pace. Did a 5 min. run/1 min. walk pattern and kept it nice

Lee, congrats on your AG award! It's really hard to race well so soon after

6 miles around a 10 min. pace. Since it's Oct. and there are only 2 more
months left in 2012, I decided to look at the running goals I posted last
Dec. Here's my status:
5K - sub-23, PR: 23:33
Nowhere near beating this time. Best 5K in 2012 was 24:24. :P
5 miles (Apple Harvest Race specifically) - sub-40, PR: 40:33
I did not run a sub-40 but I believe I would have beaten my PR by a couple
of seconds, if the course had not been lengthened due to the accident on
race day.
10K - sub-50, PR: 51:49
I ran a 50:37 in Holyoke so I got a PR but not the sub-50 yet.
10 miles (Norfolk Pub 10 miler specifically) - sub-1:28, PR: 1:31:36
This race is coming up in Dec.
half marathon - sub-1:50, PR: 1:52:39
I did this! 1:48:29 at Oleksak! Yay!
marathon - sub-4, PR: 4:10:46
I did this too! 3:59:50 at Worcester.
ultra/31 miles - sub-5:10, PR: 5:30:20
I opted to run the 50 mile race so unless I find another 50K to run before
Dec. 31, 2012, I can't comment on this goal.
Can someone find me a 5K and a 10K to PR at? :)

Lee's running goals in 2012 were / are
1 a sub-22 minute 5K
2 a sub-8 minute pace in 2 half marathons
3 to complete the JBLWU 50 mile
4 East Hartford Memorial mile in 6:15
5 2:30 in Peoples Forest 17.134 mile
6 to run a sub-4 marathon
7 to place 1st in age in 10 races
Lee's results in 2012 (as of 10/19/2012)
1 not yet, best so far is 23:08 @ Newington Library 5K (might run
Jamie's Run)
2 not yet, ran 8:08 @ Iron Horse but there's still Ghost Run
3 barely
4 did not run it
5 nope, did a 2:43
6 met (3:55 @ Mohawk) :)
7 doubt it (might have just placed in 10 races) (but there are ~ 6 more
races ... I've run 24 races so far this year)
Summary ...
So far, I've only met 2 out of 7 goals :( (but the year ain't over yet

- want me to send him/her a nasty letter on your behalf? :)
Brent, looks like you can cancel the "Bring Tim to CT" fundraiser. False
alarm.
Man, my workout today did not go as planned at all. Brace yourselves for
a Steph story. I wanted to run 4 1-mile repeats around an 8:15/8:20 pace.
I started getting cramps after the first repeat but took a walk recovery
break and started the second repeat. By the end of the second repeat, I
developed really intense cramps and realized I had better start scoping out
a discreet area for a quick bathroom break! Well, I did the best I could.
At least I was on no one's property. I didn't stop my watch and, apparently,
I walked a mile in 14:50, including the bathroom stop. Ha ha - I challenge
anyone to try that!
Anyway, got home in the nick of time for another bathroom break. So the
workout was cut short - 1 mile warm up, 2 1-mile repeats (8:15, 8:17) and
a 1 mile walk. Better luck tomorrow.

Burlington 5K....its actually 3.4 miles. They informed us it is longer than
advertised. The middle 1.5 miles on very technical trails with large hills,
tone of roots, constant loose rocks the size of basketballs. Had to list
the ugly features before showing my time of 33:23. The 9:46 pace looks terrible
but look at the elevation graph on the Garmin link below. I started at a
sub 8/mile pace and finished at that pace but the trails killed me. These
are natural trails which at some points were less than 2 feet wide. Dirt,
mud, two streams to jump, etc. Have I listed enough to justify my crappy
time? But a fun race for a good cause which is to fund a display for the
Burlington Bell which is 140 years old. They had the bell at the start line
and rang it to start the race.

Hey Mike, nice job today! You don't have to convince me how one's
pace significantly deteriorates on the trails. How the heck can you sprint
over rocks, roots, etc.? You're wise to slow down versus twisting an ankle.
Congrats to Lee and Brent on their 6.66 mile race today. I liked the number
so I stopped my Garmin at 6.66 miles today as well. Took me 1 hour and 17
sec./9:04 pace, however. Much slower than the boys. I topped out at 41.5
miles this week. Today I did 2 sets of the "Spartacus" workout. It's 10
exercises that you do for 50 sec. each with a 10 sec. rest in between. And
once again, my buns hurt. I think I should get compression undergarments

So far (and beginning to support Mike's prediction) this storm is overrated.
Did a 4+ easy run (11 min. pace) around the track. Rain and wind came and
went, came and went. Cancelling school not warranted in my book.
PS
I sent Bill Odendahl a couple of pictures of him and his speedy and cute
nine-year-old Christina (who ran the 6.66 yesterday) and he got back thanking
me and then offering me free entry to next year's Triple Crown if I was interested.
I know we've talked about Steamtown for a Fall full for next year but what
say Tray, Brent, Mike do the Newport full? The Triple Crown is 3 Rhode Island
half marathons (Providence, Jamestown and Newport). I got back to Bill and
said I was real interested and had a couple of friends that might want to
do the full. Newport (the town) is really beautiful (Tray and Mike know this).
Newport the marathon is very scenic, especially the Ocean Drive section.
Gradually rolling in spots but basically flat. Think about it.
PPS
I think it's cool (hot?) that Tray decided to hit her watch @ 6.66. When
we're apart, we're together.

I haven't run since last Wednesday. Vermont was a blast! You should see my
biceps from lifting all those pints ;)
Working the storm - 36 hour shift. Probably wont run again until Wednesday,
which will make Sundays ghost run really interesting. I had to cancel running
this last year one because of tropical storm Irene, I'm not going to let
Sandy get me this year!

6 miles today at 10:40. Very calm and peaceful. No wind and no rain. Nice
morning for a run. Amazingly we never lost power throughout the storm so
life is back to normal here.

8.5 miles/9:56 pace. Frankenstorm was a bust here in Southington - nothing
more than rain and a little wind. Very grateful, as there appears to be
mass devastation in plenty of places. Lea, you're very generous to volunteer
at the shelter for so many hours. Try to get a little rest before Ghost
Run.

I am happy to report my right knee didn't experience the sharp pain I felt
when I ran on Monday. On Monday I snuck in a 4 mile run to and around the
local track. It was windy and rainy but really nothing compared to what other
parts of Connecticut experienced later. Off and on I've had a slight pain
in this knee. It usually comes about 1 mile into a run and then goes away
soon after. But on Monday it was pretty pronounced so I was *real* glad when
it didn't happen today.
Today's run was about 5 miles and real slow. Looking at Tray and Mike's paces,
I'm a slouch. Oh well, it's great to get out and run in this much nicer weather.
I second Tracy's remarks on Lea's weekend work. I am sure she is appreciated.
Speaking of Miss Lea, she asked Kelly Bindert if Ghost is on and IT IS!
Yay! Thanks for everything you do Lea.
Will run tomorrow. Off Friday. Double Dip Sat/Sun.

Only had time for a short run today - 5.5 m/11:23 pace. Guess it was a good
thing because I was extra logey - felt like I was carrying 10 pumpkins on
my back. I even (pathetically) added some walk breaks.
This morning I accompanied Andrew's class to Camp Sloper for a field trip.
Not even 2 min. walking on the trail and bam, I'm down. Clipped my toe
on a tree root covered with leaves and went smack down on my right knee!
It hurt but luckily no bruising or swelling. I can't even describe the
sheer panic I felt initially at the thought of possibly injuring myself to
the point of no running. I seriously think I would rather fall on my head!
LOL Anyway, all is fine. I'm just exhausted and should probably listen
to my body. Tomorrow is supposed to be a run day but I'll see how I feel.
