12 edge pieces, 22 "interior edge" pieces, 7 "deep interior" pieces. 12
+ 22 + 7 = 41. Note : The second puzzle cut ("cherry pie") has 43
pieces. 43 + (3 * 41) = 166 total pieces.
Originally, this was going to be a single large puzzle, involving
cutting and gluing etc. But that idea was dropped and four separate
puzzles were built. The "trapping border" is common but the interior
pieces were drawn by hand for each puzzle. A non-interlocking edge piece
resulted in adjustments to this area and the non-interlocking of the
entire interior area resulted in adding "knobs" to the interior pieces.
Only the last puzzle cut ("ice cream") used this final design.
