Cadmium is a chemical element with the symbol Cd and atomic number 48. The soft, bluish-white metal is chemically similar to the two other metals in group 12, zinc and mercury. Similar to zinc it prefers oxidation state +2 in most of its compounds and similar to mercury it shows a low melting point compared to transition metals. Cadmium and its congeners are not considered transition metals, in that they do not have partly filled d or f electron shells in the elemental or common oxidation states.[2] Cadmium is a relatively abundant element. Cadmium was discovered in 1817 by Friedrich Stromeyer as an impurity in zinc carbonate.

Cadmium occurs as a minor component in most zinc ores and therefore is a by-product of zinc production. Cadmium was used for a long time as a pigment and for corrosion resistant plating on steel. Cadmium compounds were used to stabilize plastic. With the exception of its use in nickel-cadmium batteries and cadmium telluride solar panels, the use of cadmium is generally decreasing in all other applications. This decrease is due to the high toxicity and carcinogenicity of cadmium and the associated health and environmental concerns. Although cadmium is toxic, one enzyme, a carbonic anhydrase with cadmium as reactive center has been discovered.

Periwinkus the Magician has a pet monster named Mugwhump. Early one Sunday Mugwhump broke into Periwinkus' potion cabinet and drank an entire vial of growth potion. The growth potion takes a while to start working, but by Monday Mugwhump had grown half again as tall as he was. By Tuesday he had grown one-third taller than he was on Monday. In general, on the nth day after taking the potion he was one-nth taller than he was on the (n - 1)th day. Ordinarily, Periwinkus would immediately have given Mugwhump the corresponding shrink potion as an antidote, but he didn't have any on hand, and unfortunately it takes 98 days to brew a new batch. However, Periwinkus knew he had no other choice, and began brewing a new batch of shrink potion right away. Today's challenge: How much bigger was Mugwhump after 98 days than he was when he drank the potion?

brokerage acct have his, Dave's & my name on it and an informal understanding is

*1 like Dave Hilton, try to merge what you love with something that you
get paid for - try to avoid what might not work well for you - ask
questions when you interview to get a sense of what skills will be
needed and then try to learn the needed skill if you don't have it (in
any way you can) - bike riding produces less pollution and is less
stressful

*2 we sometimes find we've done things that cause these kinds of
problems - it gets expensive so, cherish life and move carefully. Think
long term cuz you're going to live w/ what you create. I don't want to
cover too much now. One or two significant issues per session.

Never Argue with a Woman

One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage
after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap.

Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat
out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, and
begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent.

Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside
the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden.

'Have a nice day Ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL:

Never argue with a woman who reads.  It's likely she can also think.
