"No parentheses are needed - my solution has only a multiplication and two subtractions, no unseemly divisions!"

Make 8

The object of this challenge is to develop ten mathematical expressions that equal 8. You must use the digits 2, 7 and one other. This other digit must be a 0 in the first expression, a 1 in the next expression, a 2 in the next expression and so on, up to 9. You may use a digit once and only once in each expression.

You may use +, -, *, /, exponentiation, decimal points and parentheses.

Here's a solution when using 2, 7 and 1.

8=2+7-1

Hi Lee -

I have run this twice. The organizers are very very nice and
accommodating. It is a very low key race, good for spectators who can
relax in the park and see you coming by each lap. The other runners are
really nice too. So needless to say I will run again. What distance are
you running? In the past you sign up for whatever, but you can see how
it goes on race day and run whatever distance you feel like you can do
as the race progresses. Afterwards, they usually send you a disc with
all the race photographs they have taken. I guess I will see you there!

(7+3)!/3! ways (604,800 ways) to arrange 7 distinct items and 3 similar items.

Thanks for the formula Blaine. I think it's actually 10*10!/3! ways (6,048,000 ways) because you've got the hyphen and it can't go at the beginning. I'm pretty sure I now have the answer. I was helped by a small hint over at npr-puzzle-11010-string-of-alphabet.html. Staring at a bunch of 1000-word files generated by my program plus this hint finally were enough to get me there. I've submitted my answer to NPR (no doubt joining a bunch of others).

Tinyc Tim, if you exclude the hyphen at the beginning you might as well exclude it at the end. That makes *nine* potential slots for the hyphen as I noted previously. 9*10!/3! = 5,443,200. As you discovered, the human brain's ability to see patterns will outdo brute force in this case.

GCD(462, 1071 mod 462) = GCD(462, 147). The latter GCD is calculated
from the GCD(147, 462 mod 147) = GCD(147, 21), which in turn is
calculated from the GCD(21, 147 mod 21) = GCD(21, 0) = 21.

Lee,

I created an FTP account for you on the HTC site. Here are the steps I
use to get the photos on the site.

    * Log onto the FTP site

ftp.powweb.com
user id: photoadmin
password: raceph0t0$ (the 0 are zeros)

    * Open the album directory and navigate to where you want to create
a directory and make it.

    * Upload the photos. Each must be less than a meg in size.

    * Go to the photo web page (http://hartfordtrackclub.org/photos)

    * Login - I believe I sent you an e-mail earlier with the user id
and password for Coppermine. If you need me to send it again, I'll find
it in my sent folder.

    * Click on the Albums button

    * Create a new album

    * Click on the Batch add files button

    * Choose the directory that you created in your FTP program

    * Click the ok button

    * If the pictures are uploadable, you will see baby pictures on the
right side and the names on the left. If they are not uploadable, you
will only see the file names. The one reason I have found so far that
they are not uploadable are because of their size.

    * On the top right, select an album to put them in

    * Select the Insert selected files button

    * The next screen is confusing. Hopefully you will see OK in the
Result column.

And you are done. It is kind of a pain.

We have choices of the following photo software through Powweb:

    * Gallery2
    * Coppermine
    * ZenPhoto

Let me know if you would rather a different one and I can install it.

Thanks for your help!

1a - Left to right, that's our first woman, and new women's record holder,
Brittany Heninger, Chester Lau, race director and founder Bill Katz,
David Reik (me), and David Ricciuti, our third-place finisher. Will
Graustein was the camera artist, using my camera. At least with my
computer, you can download any of these pictures with lots of pixels if
you click on the magnifying glass in the upper-righthand corner and then
right-click on the picture and click on "Save As."

Let's see if I can insert a link to the complete results here: http://www.coolrunning.com/results/10/ct/Feb7_Gideon_set1.shtml

2a - Actually, when I (David Reik) asked everyone to do a Graustein
wave, I, inadvertently, had the camera off.

1 - These are our top-three finishers during the race, Brittany
Heninger, David Poirot, and David Ricciuti. Race winner Dave Poirot is
wearing the fluorescent yellow vest. Bill Katz must have taken this
picture from his moving car.

2 - Race winner David Poirot has pulled away! Another Katz photo from
his car.

3 - One of our several baby-jogger teams. I believe that's Scott
Livingston, who ended up finishing fourth overall. I'm not sure where
Bill Katz took this one, probably at the end of the first loop.

4 - This was taken by Bill Katz at the end of the first loop.

5 - Another Katz photo at the end of the first loop.

6 - Left to right, that's Peter Briggeman, Chris Armen, and Kathy
Lundin. Note the looks of determined effort that Bill Katz captured at
the end of the first loop, about the 1.8-mile mark.

7 - Left to right, that's Dea Collins, Maggie Rose, Kathleen Scotti, Lee
Bradley, Rose Famiglietti, and Janit Romayko. Bill Katz was the camera
artist.

Dear Lee and Linda,

How long does it take to drive from Bradley Airport to Old Lyme? Ive
found a wonderful site on the internet and have been viewing places
with all kinds of cottage pix and descriptions. Feb. 15 they will
give me prices and I could put down a deposit for 2-4 weeks in the
month of Aug.

Am having 6 women who live alone now and who are quilters come for
Easter. Everything is okay here with volunteering at The Community
Care Center and at The Food Bank. Working in the pre-school part of
the C.C. Center turned out to be too strenuous, darn! Are you tutoring,
Lee? Are you preparing IRS taxes, Linda?

Thanks Lee for setting up Facebook for me. A college roommate and
another friend from college found me and weve enjoyed emailing. Love,
Sally
