invited by Tray to run a few loops w/ her at Roxbury full
Hi Lee, How was your trip to Vermont? Good Thanksgiving? We went to Barry's sister's in Mass. I made an awesome sweet potato casserole, stuffing, and banana cake. We spent the weekend getting up the Christmas decorations. I forgot to ask if you guys ever took your tree down from last year? LOL So - a quick question for you to consider. Do you feel like running a few of the last miles of the marathon in Roxbury? I know you're doing a 5K the next day so I don't want to mess that up for you. I emailed Chris, who is in charge of the race, and he said support people are fine as long as they don't cross the finish line. Apparently, there is a loop that repeats 5 times so it would be your choice of how much to run. If it's a 3.5 mile loop, maybe 2 loops for a total of 7 miles? Let me know. TrayAmanda is coming

Paul Ever since the day you contacted me and invited me to join the racing team I have been very grateful. You inspired me, and for many years were always sure to email everyone to remind them of upcoming races. You were either running or on the sidelines cheering us on. For a period we were at the top of the results. But the last couple of seasons attendance has waned and people went their ways. I plan on running till nothing works any more and I hope that takes a long time but I think I will do it as an individual, trying to place in my age, which will soon break into a new decade. I love running and the companionship it provides. I have no fewer than 5 events in the queue (Tinsel Fun Run, Santa's Run, Roxbury full (just the last 7 w/ a friend), Christopher Martins and Norfolk Pub 10 Miler.) I am a recreational mathemusician currently living on Long Island, NY.
I love music that is fun, and I love music that is interesting, but above all I love music that is beautiful. I prefer writing for real, classical instruments, because of the added emotion and interpretation a performer adds to each unique performance.
I like most creative activities that involve making a lot of noise, mess, or both. Aside from composing, I love improvising on various instruments, drawing, sculpting, and other methods of making things. My main hobby is mathematics, with special interests in symmetry, polyhedra, and surreal complexity. This usually manifests as collaborative research in computational geometry and other areas of theoretical computer science, or as mathematical art. I think the human brain is incredible and strange, so I have developed a great interest in dreaming and consciousness. As a result, I am a trained hypnotist and a lucid dreamer. The human body is pretty neat as well, so I enjoy dancing and judo. I always love to learn new things - variety is the food of creativity!

Sorry to hear about your blahs, A. I know blahs and they're no fun. Not that I'm advocating running like a maniac all the time but you're blahs are probably further enhanced by running less the last couple of days. It's an oxymoron - you give your body a physical break and your emotional health gets all screwed up! I didn't run today because I feel like a bug could be coming on - again. So I napped and took extra Vitamin C. I plan to run 5-6 tomorrow and then take Fri. off. So you are looking forward to the break from tutoring? I thought you enjoyed it. Just tell me when to be at Brickyard. The race doesn't start until 11 a.m. though. Ooh, terrible time for the oil burner to go. Can that be fixed right away? Yes, I've been torturing the animals over here. Zoe actually liked the fleecy and purred when I put it on her. Sofie loves to put it on and practically leaps into it. Mo, well Mo is Mo. Sofie is going to be spayed tomorrow. My poor baby - she has to stay overnight at the vet. Books are hit or miss sometimes. I'm going to read a few more pages of Croix's book before bed. Cheesecake does sound awesome. I'm up 2 lbs. though. I'm like the only person who could run 3 marathons in less than 60 days and actually gain weight. So unfair. Hope you feel better - vent anytime. The Pi Song
Hey Lee, Been looking at various training plans to run a 50 mile race and they ain't pretty! I emailed Emmy Stocker, since she is an ultramarathoner, for some advice and she said she would get back to me. The plans all call for several hours of running on both Sat. and Sun. The only way I could swing that is to do our regular long group run on Sat. and then go out again on Mon. for another long run. Don't know if that would matter or not - probably not. Also, you may want to do some reading on training and running a 50 miler. It's really unlike any of the race distances we have done in terms of training for and running it. Anyway, here's my theme song for the race: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE8ky3vv1bI Tray http://catchmp3.net/?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE8ky3vv1bI Van Halen Don't wanna wait 'til tomorrow Why put it off another day? One by one, little problems Build up, and stand in our way. Oh One step ahead, one step behind it Now ya gotta run to get even Make future plans I'll dream about yesterday, hey! Come on turn, turn this thing around (Right now) Hey! It's your tomorrow (Right now) Come on, it's everything (Right now) Catch your magic moment Do it right here and now It means everything Miss a beat, you lose a rhythm An nothin' falls into place. No! Only missed by a fraction Slipped a little off your pace. Oh! The more things you get, the more you want Just trade in one for another Workin' so hard to make it easy Whoa, got to turn. Come on, turn this thing around (Right now) Hey, it's your tomorrow (Right now) Come on, it's everything (Right now) catch that magic moment Do it right here and now It means everything Said a lie to me Right now What are ya waitin' for? Oh! Yeah! Right now (Guitar Solo) (Right now) Hey! It's your tomorrow (Right now) Come on, it's everything (Right now) Catch that magic moment And do it right, right now (Right now) Oh, right now! It's what's happening Right here and now Right now, it's right now Oh! Tell me, what are ya waitin' for? Turn this thing aroundor put salt on its tail ...

Betsy Mainiero Hi there Lee..Happy New Year! So..you've got the ultra bug!!!! LW was my first 50 miler too! I don't know where you are with your long runs yet....and I can only say what works for me.... As you know...that course is completely runnable..there are no hard hills that would warrant walking, but walk you will....your training will have to prepare you to be on your feet for 9-10+ hours. The only way to do that is to build your long run..not so much on miles but on time. I ran a long run once a week for 2 consecutive weeks and then week 3 would still have decent mileage but no long run. I ran a few 20 milers..up to to about 26 miles at an easy training pace and tapered for 2 weeks. You should def. run a few 4 hour runs if you can. l also ran a back to back weekend about a month before the race (2 half-marathons in one weekend). You need to be used to running on tired legs. My best advice to you is to remember that you love to run. Ultras are all in the mind. No one is paying you or making you do this. You do it for the joy of the challenge and the run. Try to get into the mindset of "spending the day" on a run. Don't focus on the miles or the laps around the lake. I'm sure you know a lot already about hydration and nutrition. If you have questions about that, let me know. Keep me updated..I want to hear about your training! My best to Linda. How is she doing?emailed Chip (Circle of Life & Glass harp)

Lee, You should take two days off. Tray and I are counting on you to push us thru 18's in better weather. I'm speechless from Tray's weather report, guess its payback from last weekend. Next winter I am vacationing in Cal & Flor for 2 weeks and running. I am so looking forward to 8.5 or 17. Brent
I did it manually. I started with the idea that each were 1-12. That would work fine except for ties. So any tie has to be an equal chance for each die. So if you compare A to B, or A to C, or A to D, or etc. So assuming any group of 2, 3, or 4 ties, then each has to have the same chance to win. So the permutations of 1-4 have to be involved too. Maybe that will help? - Stephen
Hmmm. That looks like it would work. You might need more than 100 times to make sure you have good info for the switch. Computing time is cheap, right? To avoid all ties, the numbers will be 1-48. My first comment was that one would want each number to have effectively 1-12, in the sense that a "12" on A should always beat 1-11 on B, C, and D. So for each die, "12" has to be from 45-48. Any of those numbers would beat all the rest coming from 1-44. The key will be when each die rolls a tie. We need to arrange the sets of 4 (1-4, 5-8, 9-12, ..., 45-48) so that each die wins an equal amount of time. Using premutation, one can set all of the sets of four. A>B>C>D A>B>D>C A>C>B>D, etc. Congrats on the run! - StephenIcon Sucker works!(needs however to be rebuilt under VB 2010
